Retired? Why Not Become a Movie Extra?

A few years ago I found myself in the movie world. My picture was up on a website for work  and I had been approached by someone filming a documentary.  He said I looked a lot like the person they were trying to cast for, and would I consider coming out for 2 days and filming with their crew. So I said yes I would go and out try! You can watch the documentary here: Documentary. Filming a documentary turned out to be a fun and fairly easy experience .  It’s not really considered acting though,  as you don’t have specific lines. Usually the real characters that were involved typically narrate the story anyway.  But I had a lot of fun and so I thought maybe I should learn a little more about this movie industry.  The first thing I did was search for background or extra casting agents in my city.  They typically have a website that you simply send in a headshot(kids don’t need a professional one) and an application.  Its that easy and you are usually contacted when the movies come to town!   I also found Facebook groups for our city that extra casting directors would post when they needed background or extras for any movie or show coming up.

So now you have been booked for a day on set, what happens!  The casting agent will typically send you wardrobe notes and hair and makeup.  So if you are filming a fall scene, you would bring solid colors and stay away from bold prints or black and white.
Hair and makeup I always do as if I was going out on a normal day.  The biggest mistake that I made in the beginning, was bringing way to many clothes and accessories!   I would bring a suitcase!  Now I bring 3 outfits, usually one skirt or pants that can have two totally different tops that change the look and one other outfit such as a dress or a nice jacket for a guy.  Make it simple, solid colors and no patterns.   Then go and enjoy the day!  You will be told where and when to report to set, there is always a big sign that says either background holding or extras holding.  You go inside there and report to someone sitting there usually with a microphone in his/her ear.  They will cross your name off the list and then someone will help you pick an outfit that you brought for the first scene.  You will then be sent off to hair and makeup to fix or change anything and you are ready for set.    When you get to the “hot set” where the actors are, its very important to keep quiet and realize that you are in their working space.   Be respectful do you job (walking across the room) and you will have a blast!  You get a hot cooked meal, meet new friends, and get paid!

Essential Oils and Allergies

Lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oils ease inflammation while bolstering the immune system to make allergies less problematic.  This mist has an appealing fragrance and may be used several times a day.

4 oz water

30 drops lavender essential oil

30 drops lemon essential oil

30 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix together and shake well to blend in a dark colored glass spray bottle.   Spray this blend throughout any indoor spaces where allergy sufferers spend time.

Weight-Loss And Essential Oils

Essential oils are the pure and natural way to lose weight.  Essential oils can be used to support healthy weight loss and promote total well-being during the physical and emotional changes that accompany it.

Blend the essential oils into your diffuser 

Although essential oils are generally seen as safe to use, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Essential oils shouldn’t be ingested. These oils are super potent, and even a few drops can cause you to experience severe gastrointestinal discomfort. If you do ingest essential oil and have an adverse reaction, seek medical assistance.

Never use undiluted essential oil, as it may cause inflammation and irritation. You should always do a patch test to determine how your skin will react to the diluted essential oil.

If you are pregnant or nursing, be sure to consult with your doctor before use.

Mental Health And Essential Oils

Rosewood essential oil balances mind and body alike, lifting the spirits, helping with headaches, and boosting the immune system.  Diffuse 3 to 5 drops of rosewood essential oil in the area where you spend the most time, and consider adding 1 or 2 drops in an aromatherapy pendant  to take advantage of the essential oil’s benefits through out the day. Rosewood essential oil is also an aid to effective meditation.


Rosemary and sage combine to calm the nerves, alleviate feelings of depression, and improve overall mental function.  This is an outstanding blend to diffuse when working; it sharpens focus and facilitates a positive outlook.  In a small glass bowl, blend 3 drops of rosemary essential oil with 3 drops of sage essential oil, and diffuse the blend.  You may also add 1 or 2 drops to your bath or to a washcloth placed on the floor of your shower.

How Can Essential Oils Help Arthritis?

Arthritis symptoms vary depending on the type of arthritis; many sufferers experience joint pain, stiffness, and a debilitating loss of range of motion.  While many people with arthritis are past middle age, there are some forms of the disease that strike younger people, including juveniles.



Makes 14 Treatments

Toxins complicate arthritis, and detoxifying essential oils such as cypress, fennel, and juniper can bring rapid relief.  Do not use any other arthritis treatments for the two weeks that you use this bath, even those containing essential oils.  Do not use this remedy if you have broken skin or are prone to rashes.

30 drops fennel essential oil

16 drops cypress essential oil

10 drops juniper essential oil

2 handfuls epsom salts

1 handful dead sea or rock salt

  1. In a dark colored glass bottle, add the fennel, cypress, and juniper esesential oils, and shake well to blend.
  2. While the water is running, add the epsom and dead sea salts to the bathtub followed by 4 drops of the essential oil blend
  3. Soak for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Repeat this treatment once a day for 2 weeks.  Store the bottle in a cool, dark place between uses.


Makes 60 Treatments

Peppermint essential oil alleviates the pain and inflammation that accompanies arthritis.  Use this soothing massage oil as often as needed to bring fast relief, naturally.

3 1/2 ounces carrier oil

60 drops peppermint essential oil(other choices:ginger, eucalyptus, or thyme)

  1. In a dark colored glass bottle, add the carrier oil and the peppermint essential oil, and shake well to blend.
  2. Allow the massage oil to sit unused for 4 days.
  3. Using your fingertips, apply 1 to 3 drops of the blend to each affected area.
  4. Repeat this treatment as needed.  Store the bottle in a cool, dark place between uses.

Using Essential Oils To Battle Depression

I recently went through a tough emotional week.  My mother in law passed away, and all the emotions that go with that took me right down.   As a rule, I am a pretty happy upbeat person, for some reason when I lose a love one I grieve hard, even with my faith.

I was tired of being sad and slightly depressed for over 6 days.  I would cry easily and didn’t have much energy, so unlike my usual self.

I turned to essential oils to break my mood.    Here are some great suggestions to break your depressive mood!

Essential Oils Featured Favourites!

I thought it would be fun to feature two Essential Oil favourites, so you can learn the health value of each!

Add Cauliflower Rice To Your Healthy Meals!

Because rice can often leave dishes feeling heavy, it’s nice to substitute a vegetable where a starch would usually be. In addition, it’s a great way to squeeze more servings of vegetables into your day.

To make cauliflower rice simply cut it into smaller pieces and then put it in a chopper. We like to use the “bullet” it’s fast and easy to clean

Once you have your cauliflower rice, it’s easy to cook! Simply sauté in a large skillet over medium heat in 1 Tbsp oil. Cook for a total of 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, then season as desired (such as with soy sauce or lime and cilantro essential oil)

Make Sure You Take Care Of Your Health When On Set!


Last night I was on set for a show that is filming here in Winnipeg.  My call time was 1215 am, and I was cut at 5 am in the morning.  Let me tell you, it can be hard on your body and your health.  Here are my tips for staying healthy on set:

  1. Drink lots of water
  2. Bring some of your own healthy snacks
  3. Get out of the holding/trailer and go for a walk, just not too far so they can find you.
  4. Bring a book
  5. Bring your phone and headphones so you can tune out and listen to music or a podcast
  6. Bring several layers of clothing the temperature can change quickly in the time you are there.
  7. Use essential oils to invigorate you, or relax you as need be!
  8. Enjoy yourself!  Whether you are there for background or a role, it should be fun and not too stressful.  If you aren’t enjoying it don’t do it!  Its a choice you get to make for your life.  I personally love it, and love the craziness and constant change of the movie life!
