L’Oreal Magic Root Cover Up- This one is usually found in the drug store, and is a lower price point.Its a temporary grey concealer spray.  Its quick and easy, lightweight and dries in a flash.  There is no smudging or sticky residue when dry.-Its lasts until the next shampoo.  Ammonia free, peroxide free and no synthetic dyes.

  1. Kevin Murphy Retouch.Me-This brand is usually found at your professional hair salon and is slightly more expensive.  Its also a root touch-up spray and it tends to also be lightweight and non sticky.   I find this brand to be a little deeper in color and you need less of it.

  1. SureThik Hair Thickening Fibers-This product gives you thicker hair in 10 seconds. It tends to “fill in” your part line as the hair grows and you have regrowth that needs covering.  These are fibres that shake onto the hair line and you follow up with a light hairspray to keep in place.  They work well when you have a little hair regrowth.

  1. Batiste Instant Hair Refresh-When you go a few days between shampoos, you can use this brown coloured dry shampoo under the hair and also on the hair line.  I use this on day 3 or 4 between washes.  It works quite well and adds some color and dimention to my hair between salon visits.

I Was Your Sunshine Dad, Do You Remember. Living With Alzheimer’s.

I was always daddy’s girl.  To this day I still can’t cook very well, because instead of helping my mum in the kitchen like other girls did, I would follow my dad around.  I would go into his workshop and ask what all the tools were for and the use of each one.  When he had to make a trip to cut wood, or haul things to the garbage dump. I always went.  To me these were grand adventures and I loved to see new things and explore.  Even if the locations weren’t the most picturesque.

My dad was my friend, he was always the calm one.  When I would fight with mum, which became more and more in my teenage years, I could go for a walk with dad and he would give me peace, with a calmer viewpoint on things.  My dad and I walked many miles growing up. Dad was also a singer. No one really knew this outside of our home, but he was always singing, whistling or humming a tune.  He loved country music and knew words to many songs.  I didn’t realize how happy that made me feel until I went back through my memories and the house was almost lit up with his singing.  It was a happy time, we had a normal happy home growing up.  Middle class Canadian.

The years went past, and I grew up got married and moved away.  I didn’t see dad as much anymore because we lived several provinces away. However, when we came to visit I always joined him in his walks.

It was when he was in his late 60’s that I noticed slight changes.  His memory wasn’t as good, and he would repeat things he had said.  My mum reported him doing odd things, like making cereal with water instead of milk like he had done all his life.  Tiny little flickers of change had begun.    When my husband Andrew and I went to visit them with our children the patience that was there when they were young seemed to be ebbing away, and his temper becoming shorter.

My mum began to cover up for my dad.  She was, I believe, embarrassed and scared.  When we would direct questions at my dad, and my mum would answer for him.  He began to follow her around like a lost puppy, unsure of himself and losing all his confidence.

As things progressed he started to treat me like a neighbour, or a care worker.  I realized after it was because he was already beginning to forget who I was in his life.  I once told him I was his daughter and he said no his daughter was much younger than I was, he was going back in time. I adjusted to this fact slowly and painfully.  I had tears along the way, but no regrets, as dad and I had always shared a bond and I knew he truly loved me.  Now I had to take care of him as best as I could. I would read books and research as much as I could, hoping I could find a way to slow it down.

At this point mum and dad were living in assisted living.  Here that means it’s an apartment style home, with your meals made for you in a general eating area.  It’s a good idea if there are any health issues, as others are around to keep an eye out, also its good company for them to meet with other seniors. Within the year, dads Alzheimer’sgrew rapidly worse.   I remember getting a call from my mum that dad had been at the front desk of the building asking when the boat was coming to take him to his family.  It now appeared in his mind he was living at the 20-year-old stage.

Around this time, my mum was hospitalized for dehydration.  What I haven’t told you yet is she was battling ovarian cancer.  She was the kind of person who didn’t let others know her feelings, and her fears.  My mum was stoic and strong until the end.  When she was in the hospital I said I would take my dad home.  Well, he came in the door, and within minutes started asking me where mum was, I told him and he got very angry at me.  He thought I was lying and I was for the first time scared of my dad.  This gentle person who never hit me my whole life, looked like he was going to hurt me.  I kept the kitchen island between us, until he calmed down, and I took him straight back to the hospital.  He did not take comfort in the love of his daughter, he didn’t recognize me.

Then one evening, my mum asked my dad to drive to the corner to get a newspaper….my dad did not return.  It was an evening in the middle of March in Manitoba.  There is still snow on the ground and the temperatures can vary from quite cold to just plain cold.  We drove around looking for my dad and calling him.  I remember my brother and I driving country roads in the dark yelling his name out of the car window.  My husband was also driving looking for him in the opposite direction.  I don’t know what my mum was thinking at this time.  I think she was so tired and overwhelmed.  She never told me if she broke down and cried, but I imagine the truth was beginning to set in with her.   We contacted the police, and then at 1 am we had no choice but to return home and wait for news.   At 7 am it came!   Dad had been found in a farmer’s field about 40 minutes away.  The farmer had been quite nervous about him, as my dad was found walking around saying he had to get home for dinner with the family.   The farmer had armed himself with an axe, because my dad was displaying odd behaviour.   Dad somehow drove 25 km in the wrong direction onto a dirt road and eventually ending up in a farmer’s field in the grass.  He had no coat just the shirt he had on. He was so lucky to be found alive, and that he didn’t hit anyone with his car.  It was clear to me at this point that I had to take over the decision making for dad, as mum could not do it.  I handed the RCMP his keys and called the emergency social worker.

Dad was placed into temporary housing within the week. This was so hard, but you know what the funny thing was, he didn’t seem to even understand.  He adjusted very quickly and started helping to push the other patients around in their wheelchairs.  We would go and visit him, and he seemed to enjoy the visits, but I don’t think he really knew it was me.  He began to whistle again, so I knew he was somewhat happy inside.   I did feel guilty, but his safety and the safety of others became paramount.   Dad lived the last year of his life in a nice small nursing home, that was near my house so that I could visit him often.  These visits weren’t for my dad anymore, as he did not recognize me at all.  They were for me, to love him and spend time with him, as I knew he had for me all those years when I was young.

Dad eventually passed away later that year from the natural progression of Alzheimer’s.  The battle was over, and it was time to let him go.  I prefer to remember my dad as the vibrant, creative, happy, loving person he was before the Alzheimer’saffected his brain and personality.

He was my dad, and I was his sunshine.

Make A Choice To Turn Off The Panic

I felt like my peace was being taken from me, that each day I felt more anxious and worried about my family and myself. I would look outside and wonder if it was the beginning of the end. I realized that fear not faith was entering my life.
I found myself falling back into old habits that gave me false comfort. I had worked hard to get past these and improve my health and wellness for a while, so it made me sad to see myself using them as a crutch again. (Nothing more sinister than too much chocolate and chips) But I knew it was for the wrong reasons.

I woke up this morning and the sun is still in the sky, the birds are chirping and its a new day. Just because we are staying home more doesn’t mean we can’t find the good in each day. What will bring you more joy and happiness in your day? Creativity!

Find Your Creative Inner Child

Remember when you were little and you sat in the grass making a daisy chain, creativity in your life brings joy and hope. Creativity can come in many forms. It can be listening to music that you like, going for a walk and really noticing nature around you. It might mean cleaning out those closets that you have been meaning to for so long and getting rid of old clothes, making room for the fresh and new. For a long time I thought I wasn’t creative, because I came from a family that has artistic ability, such as drawing and painting. I can’t do either very well, but I am a part of creation, therefore I am creative. So now I am walking each day listening to podcasts or youtube videos that inspire me. I have jumped on the old treadmill in the basement that used to be a clothes hanger, and listen to my favourite music. I may even try some yoga at home later today. There are a lot of videos online that you can use! What about that hobby that you keep looking at in the basement but don’t do anything about? I have a sewing machine and fabric downstairs that has been there for 10 years. Maybe since I have the time, I should actually try and sew something. I also like to create inspirational posts for my pinterest board. These things lift me out of any kind of low mood, and make me think upward. This is not a time for panic, but to have faith in something bigger than yourself.

Stay Connected With Others

The 2 meter rule feels so odd at times. People you would normally walk up to and have a conversation with, you are simply waving from a distance and walking the other way. It can feel very lonely. Make sure you call your friends, facetime, talk to your neighbour even if its over the fence. In times like these human caring and friendship is needed the most. There is always man’s best friend!  Thankfully dogs can’t get sick with this, so feel free to hug them many times a day!

Choosing Faith over Fear

I feel like I have flowed in and out of faith my whole life.  Sometimes going to church, sometimes feeling like I have fallen away.  Ultimately there is a river that flows deep within me that is the truth of what I believe.  I need faith and God in my life to bring peace and especially in times of fear and panic.  I haven’t gone to a church building in quite a long time, so watching videos of services or listening to podcasts is not new to me.   I really enjoy listening to

What To Do With The Kids At Home!

With the schools closing due to the Coronavirus outbreak, millions of children are now at home which can create a new crisis for parents.Whether its your own kids, your grandkids or helping out your best friend you are having to find fun activities to keep them busy!    Its one thing to entertain them on the weekends, but its another when you have to do it everyday and all day.

The first thing to do is make a plan.  Kids are used to have routine and a schedule each day.  Take a few moments and sit down and try to plan your week.  Take a look at how each day at home will look, then you can plan the activities around it accordingly.

Planning a schedule:

Take a look at their normal school schedule first

  • What time does their day usually start
  • When are their break times
  • When do they have physical activity
  • When is their quiet time(hopefully you can get some work done here)
  • When is the best time for school/homework

Now you have mapped out the educational part of the day its time to schedule play.

  • Schedule a few times during the day into short 15 to 30 minute time blocks. The more a child plays, the more they learn to play

Plan reading time.

  • Plan 20 minutes each day for reading time.  It can be all at once or split into different time blocks
  • Parents can read aloud, or the children can.
  • Also silent reading time is great.

Plan your screen time

  • As much as you want to have the tv as a babysitter, its better to stick to a routine.
  • Don’t leave the tv on all day as background noise, instead put on music.
  • Plan their tv time into the time segments that work for you and would be a part of your normal routine.

The Gym Is Closed, Now What?

My daughters and I like to go to the gym 4 to 5 times a week.  We alternate between spin class, yoga and lifting weights.  It helps us to stay fit both physically and mentally.  With the closure of the gym, its time to find some options that we will still enjoy, but will also provide a good workout either at home or outside.

As a precaution most of the gyms in the city are closing down, at least for a period of 3 weeks.  So where does that leave us for working out?  There are some great workout videos you can do at home!

You can also go for a walk, bike ride or hike outside.  Its actually a good way to relieve the stress and get some exercise.  As long as you keep the 6 foot rule, you can go outside with your family and enjoy the day!  We took some time and went hiking.  It was great to get outside and breathe in the fresh air, while having quality time together. Remember that its also important to dress according to the weather outside!  Make sure you have breathable fabric and good shoes!  If you live in the sunbelt, a hat is always a good option as well!  As it is hard to get to the stores right now, with the Corona Virus, we ordered some fitness clothing online here!  

Hopefully this virus will pass quickly and the gyms will reopen in a shorter amount of time.  In the meantime, it feels like we are all meant to slow down a little, maybe even appreciate life a bit more.  Enjoy the outdoors again, really take time and listen to our families and build relationships again.

Do Your Gel Nails At Home Easily!

A lot of us women have gone to nails salons for most of our lives. We enjoy being pampered and having our nails look pretty, even if its just for a trip away or a special occasion.

For many years, I also frequented the nail salon.  I regularly had some kind of tip on whether it was an acrylic or a gel nail, I was never really sure what they were actually putting on my nails.  I enjoyed the look of a nice bright pink color for spring or a deep burgundy for the fall time.The only problem that I was having was that when I had the nails removed, my nails were so weak and damaged from having them done at the salon.  The drilling and scraping had literally taken layers off of my nails.  I would try different nail strengtheners, truly wishing I could have my own natural nails.  I often didn’t have the time and sometimes the money to constantly go to the nail salon.   I had also begun hearing things about toxic free nail polish and 5 free!  I didn’t realize that some of the polishes and chemicals that had been used by the salons were also toxic and bad for my health.  Yikes!

Retired? Why Not Become a Movie Extra?

A few years ago I found myself in the movie world. My picture was up on a website for work  and I had been approached by someone filming a documentary.  He said I looked a lot like the person they were trying to cast for, and would I consider coming out for 2 days and filming with their crew. So I said yes I would go and out try! You can watch the documentary here: Documentary. Filming a documentary turned out to be a fun and fairly easy experience .  It’s not really considered acting though,  as you don’t have specific lines. Usually the real characters that were involved typically narrate the story anyway.  But I had a lot of fun and so I thought maybe I should learn a little more about this movie industry.  The first thing I did was search for background or extra casting agents in my city.  They typically have a website that you simply send in a headshot(kids don’t need a professional one) and an application.  Its that easy and you are usually contacted when the movies come to town!   I also found Facebook groups for our city that extra casting directors would post when they needed background or extras for any movie or show coming up.

So now you have been booked for a day on set, what happens!  The casting agent will typically send you wardrobe notes and hair and makeup.  So if you are filming a fall scene, you would bring solid colors and stay away from bold prints or black and white.
Hair and makeup I always do as if I was going out on a normal day.  The biggest mistake that I made in the beginning, was bringing way to many clothes and accessories!   I would bring a suitcase!  Now I bring 3 outfits, usually one skirt or pants that can have two totally different tops that change the look and one other outfit such as a dress or a nice jacket for a guy.  Make it simple, solid colors and no patterns.   Then go and enjoy the day!  You will be told where and when to report to set, there is always a big sign that says either background holding or extras holding.  You go inside there and report to someone sitting there usually with a microphone in his/her ear.  They will cross your name off the list and then someone will help you pick an outfit that you brought for the first scene.  You will then be sent off to hair and makeup to fix or change anything and you are ready for set.    When you get to the “hot set” where the actors are, its very important to keep quiet and realize that you are in their working space.   Be respectful do you job (walking across the room) and you will have a blast!  You get a hot cooked meal, meet new friends, and get paid!

Healthy Barley and Beef Soup

Make this soup the night before to allow time for its flavours to develop.  Pour hot servings into a thermos to take for lunch, or reheat individual portions in the microwave as needed.  Serve the soup with crusty bread, crackers or pita chips.

  • Cooking spray
  • 2Cups chopped onion
  • 1 pound chuck steak, trimmed and cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped peeled carrot
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 5 cloves garlic minced
  • 5 cups fat free beef broth
  • 1 cup uncooked pearl barley
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup no salt tomato puree
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 bay leaves

Heat a large Dutch oven over medium heat.  Coat the pan with cooking spray.  Add onion and beef to the pan; cook for 10 minutes or until the onion is tender and beef in browned, stirring occasionally.  Add chopped carrot and celery to pan; cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Stir in garlic; cook 30 seconds.  Stir in the uncooked barley and remaining ingredients; bring to a boil.  Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 40 minutes or until barley is done and the vegetables are tender.  Discard bay leaves.  Makes about 6 servings

Essential Oils and Allergies

4 oz water

30 drops lavender essential oil

30 drops lemon essential oil

30 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix together and shake well to blend in a dark colored glass spray bottle.   Spray this blend throughout any indoor spaces where allergy sufferers spend time.
